Federated MEP coordination for a Tier III data centre in Dubai

Data centre MEP coordination operates under a different set of constraints to commercial or residential projects. The N+1 redundancy requirements for cooling and power mean that every coordination decision has a direct consequence for the facility's operational resilience.

We were appointed as BIM coordinator at Stage 3 with a brief to establish the federated coordination environment, manage the clash cycle programme, and deliver a zero-residual-clash model through to handover.

The first intervention was restructuring the coordination protocol to reflect data centre-specific requirements. Standard clash tolerance settings do not account for the clearance requirements around cooling distribution units or the routing constraints imposed by hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment systems.

Weekly federation cycles ran across all 14 discipline models. Each clash report was triaged within 24 hours, with issues assigned to named discipline leads and resolution deadlines aligned to the design programme.

At handover, the as-built federated model was handed to the FM operator alongside a commissioning verification report confirming that every cooling redundancy path in the model had been physically verified against the installed condition.
